PRODUCTION OF STRONGLY INTERACTING W’s IN INELASTIC ELECTRON-NUCLEON COLLISIONSt
نویسنده
چکیده
We consider the possibility of extending the search for the intermediate vector boson by observing the products of inelastic electron-nucleon collisions. If the W has mass less than 5.1 BeV/c’ and can interact strongly, then experiments at SLAC, which look for muons with large transverse momentum, should provide a sensitive probe to its existence. If the W is not observed in the proposed experiments, we can deduce stringent upper bounds on the W-nucleon cross section or conclude that if a strongly interacting W exists, it must have a mass in excess of 5.1 BeV/c2. Cosmic rays at ultra high energies (Neutrinos!)
Resonant photopion production with the cosmic microwave background predicts a suppression of extragalactic protons above the famous Greisen–Zatsepin–Kuzmin cutoff at about EGZK ≈ 5×10 10 GeV. Current cosmic ray data measured by the AGASA and HiRes Collaborations do not unambiguously confirm the GZK cutoff and leave a window for speculations about the origin and chemical composition of the highe...
متن کاملGluons in small-xB deep-inelastic scattering
The existing data obtained in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) experiments in the kinematical region xB < ∼ 10 and Q ≥ 5 GeV are examined to gain further insight into the dynamics of interacting gluons. It is shown that not only the regularities observed in diffractive scattering and those found in large-transverse-momentum jet production, but also the striking features of the structure function...

The existing data obtained in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) experiments in the kinematical region xB ≤ 10 −2 and Q ≥ 5 GeV are examined to gain insight into the dynamics of interacting gluons. It is shown that the striking experimental facts observed in this kinematical region can be readily understood in terms of concepts and methods of Complex Systems in the framework of Non-Perturbative QC...
متن کاملEffects of self-organized criticality in small−xB deep-inelastic scattering
It is pointed out that self-organized criticality (SOC) in systems of soft gluons manifest itself not only in large-rapidity gap (LRG) events, but also in normal events in small-xB deep-inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering processes. It is suggested that the following empirical facts are direct consequences of SOC in systems of interacting soft gluons which dominate the small-xB region: The stru...
متن کاملStrongly Interacting Neutrinos as the Highest Energy Cosmic Rays: A Quantitative Analysis
Scattering processes in the cosmic microwave background limit the propagation of ultra high energy charged particles in our Universe. For extragalactic proton sources resonant photopion production results in the famous Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) cutoff at about 4×10 GeV expected in the spectrum observed on Earth. The faint flux of ultra high energy cosmic rays of less than one event per year...
